Social Concerns
The Social
Concerns Committee is the umbrella under which all the social concerns
of the congregation are supported and developed.
It works towards addressing social issues through formation of task forces
and through individual efforts in volunteering for programs in the wider
community. It also stresses the connection between social justice and
spirituality.
The committee also encourages individual members to volunteer their time
and talents to work in social justice programs that have been established
in the wider community.
Current and/or former Social Concerns Task Forces at NHF include:
Amnesty International Task Force
This NHF group supports the work of Amnesty International through letter-writing
campaigns and petitions surrounding issues such as women's rights, abolishing
the death penalty, environmental degradation, and religious freedom.
Diversity Task Force
The purpose of this NHF group is to make (and keep) Northern Hills Fellowship
an affirming and welcoming place for all persons regardless or race, ethnicity,
gender, sexual orientation, disability, or faith. This Task Force was
instrumental in earning “Welcoming Congregation” status for
NHF within the Unitarian Universalist Association.
Responsible Consumption Task Force
This NHF group works inform the congregation about environmental issues
and works toward ending over consumption and creating a sustainable living
world.
Each year members of the congregation who have some social concerns create
a worship service through the Social Concerns Committee. They present
their goals and plans concerning an issue and seek approval from the congregation
to form a task force.
